Conference 2011
Perspectives on Food, Analysis and Analysts
APA Annual Conference will be held this year on 27th and 28th October at Kenwood Hall Hotel, Kenwood Road, Sheffield , S7 1NQ United Kingdom.
Following the success of last years’ event the 2011 conference will be held in Sheffield on the 27th – 28th October. The first afternoon will focus mainly on items of specific interest to Public Analysts and their staff, whilst on Friday there will be a range of speakers from a variety of disciplines.
Sheffield
One of Britain’s largest cities, Sheffield is situated on the River Don and its four tributaries, surrounded by seven hills rich in iron ore. The name Sheffield is synonymous with iron and steel as for centuries the city has been at the very heart of the steel making industry and was once the biggest producer of steel in the world. Since at least the 14th century, Sheffield’s reputation was built on its quality, innovation and sheer scale in the field of cutlery and the manufacture of nails, knives, scissors, scythes, razors, axes and other metal products. Geoffrey Chaucer described the Miller of Trumpington as carrying a Sheffield thwitel (a general purpose knife) in his Canterbury Tales.
Despite the demise of much of Sheffield’s once proud industries, the city has reinvented itself as a modern day cultural icon with a feast of traditional and contemporary experiences. It is rich in art, entertainment and architecture, and is among the greenest cities in England, with more woodland than any other. In addition, Sheffield boasts two leading universities, vibrant nightlife, a celebrated music scene, great shops, bars and restaurants and a proud sporting tradition. Sheffield is also just five miles from the glorious scenery of the Peak District National Park.
The Conference Hotel
Originally the home of George Wostenholm, a Master Cutler, and dating from 1845 The Kenwood Hall Hotel is set in 12 acres of beautiful woodland in a charming building, and yet this is just one mile from the centre of Sheffield. Some parts of the venue are particularly grand and traditional while others have been built more recently, but the stylish setting is certainly well-complemented by modern equipment and furnishings internally. The hotel provides guests with great views of the parkland it is set in, whether it is the lake or the lovely green scenery. There is also a Leisure Club which has a swimming pool, a gym, a sauna and a Jacuzzi.
Poster Competition
Again this year there will be a poster competition which is directed at junior members of staff of Public analyst Laboratories.
Partners’ Programme
This will include a visit to some of the highlights of Sheffield on Thursday afternoon and a full day excursion which will include a private tour of Haddon Hall on Friday, concluding with a guided walking tour of Sheffield on Saturday morning.
